Edisvoll 1814s defeat the Vikings in the season opener!

On a rain-soaked Saturday, the Eidsvoll 1814s showed why they are one of the top teams in Europe. The Vikings fell to the 1814s 32-14 in a game that was much closer than the score indicated.

NOTE: The memory card the pictures from the game was on shorted out two of the photographers cameras, so there won't be any pictures from the game. We are terribly sorry.

The Vikings go the scoring started first with a 70-yard touchdown pass from back-up quarterback Mehmet Sezer to Deonte Morris. The ensuing 2-point conversion proved no good. That would be all of the scoring in the first quarter.

In the 2nd quarter Eidsvoll answered with a touchdown drive to knot the score 6-6. Eidsvoll tried for the PAT but was no good. This would be the halftime score as both defenses proved to be up to the challenge. Eidsvoll managed to stop a Viking scoring drive with an interception in the red zone.

The 3rd quarter proved to be the difference in the ball game. Eidsvoll came out on their opening drive and scored to go up 12-6. The Vikings once again moved the ball deep into 1814s territory before coming up empty. Eidsvoll proceeded to go down and score to make the game 18-6, when a long completion led to the Eidsvoll score.

In the 4th quarter the 1814s hit a long touchdown pass to make it 24-6. On the kick-off, the Vikings managed to not fall on the ball, which resulted in an Eidsvoll recovery inside the 20-yard line. Eidsvoll proceeded to score a touchdown and 2-point conversion to go up 32-6. The Vikings got a late touchdown when quarterback Christian Torp kept the ball on a boot to make the final score 32-14.

The Vikings played many players that had not seen previous action during the season, and got a glimpse of the future with the two young quarterbacks making big plays for the team.

coach Brian Cain said after the game, “I was very pleased with the way Mehemt stepped in and played today. He has not gotten many snaps at the senior level in his career, but showed he has the ability to lead this team in the future. I was also pleased with the number of young guys that stepped up in their first real action and made some strides to show that they are going to be very capable of building on the Viking tradition. On a down note, we cannot get into the red zone 3 different times and come away with 0 points. Those 3 possessions proved to be the difference in the ballgame.”

While the final score was not the result everybody had hopped for, the Vikings have two more opportunities to try and defeat the 1814s this coming season. They will play each other again on June 14th in Eidsvoll, and then again on June 28th in Oslo for the Norwegian Championship.
